Green Family Genealogy

The "Green Family Genealogy" is dedicated to my father-in-law, Lawrence W. Green, a man who gave his family wisdom, strength, encouragement and love throughout his life. I owe him a debt of gratitude for strengthening my desire for genealogy. Lawrence's interest in his ancestors and their homeland of Ireland sparked my curiosity many years ago. Lawrence was a father to me, as my own passed away before I was born. Without his interest, support and love, none of this history would have ever been started or completed to the best of my ability. "Thank you, Pop's. You were always there."

My research started in the late 1980's when my daughters were school age. I would like to thank my husband and daughters, who must have felt left out or neglected while my mind was full of other places and times. Thanks to all the family members who have shared their knowledge and facts. I have totally enjoyed going back into the past and traveling forward to the present. I felt if we let one more generation slip by without recording what they knew, we might have lost the information forever.

This history has been several years in the making. I will have errors but hopefully they will be corrected. I welcome any comments, corrections, additions or criticisms. I did my best to avoid writing any embarrassing facts that may have occurred during this period, although I did not uncover any scandals or bad dealings. That was not my task; it was to preserve the dates and information for future generations.

In "The Surnames of Ireland" by Edward MacLysaght the name Green is indicated in this matter: Green (e). This well-known English name does duty in Ireland for a number of Irish names, see Houneen, MacGreen, Fahy, MacAleaser, Greenan and Guerin. As many as fifty variants of the same surname are on record and members of the same family spelled their names differently. This may account the difficulty one may experience in tracing the ancestry in Ireland.

Lawrence, my husband Bill and my family, visited the gravesite of Charles and Felix Green located in the Irish Catholic Cemetery close to Marshfield, Steuben Twp., Warren Co., Indiana many years ago. This cemetery owes its existence, for the most part, to the Catholic Church, which stood at Marshfield in the early days of the town. In an article by Rev. Grover Williams that was included in the Illiana Genealogist quarterly publication of the Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society printed in the fall of 1965 states, "The Irish did much of the work in building the old Wabash and Erie Canal and later worked on the Wabash Railroad, which was built through the area in the late 1850's, which brought about the founding of Marshfield. The cemetery, however, is much older than this. There are graves belonging to the Trimble family which date to 1843 and 1844, several years before the time of Marshfield or the railroad. The first Irish burial for which there is a stone is 1864, over 20 years after the first Trimble burial. It might be claimed that this should be called the Trimble Cemetery."

When we visited the cemetery many years ago, we found stones for Charles and Felix. I am presuming that Plina (Julia), is also buried there, but found no maker to that effect. The cemetery was all grown over with weeds and in need of care. We managed to upright Felix's stone however. Since that time, the cemetery has been restored to beauty and a small chapel built. Charles Green's stone reads: "Charles Green Sr., Born in Co. Monaghan, Ireland, 1808, Died Jan. 20, 1892. Lord, Jesus, have Mercy on his soul." Felix Green's stone reads with name and 'Died June 24, 1879, Aged 29 y 10 m, Requiem in Peace." For family members, this cemetery is well worth a visit.
