The Green name was Greenan in Ireland. When Patrick came to America and worked on the railroad, his boss thought Greenan was too long and called him Green. Since his pay checks were made out that way, he had to sign it Green. When he sent for the rest of the family, he was the sponsor so they had to sign that way also.

Margaret McBride, daughter of Patrick always told that her dad came over to Amercia, when he was 17, worked on a railroad as a surveyor, to make money to send home for the rest of the family to emigrate to America.

Patrick Green dies at Alvin
A farmer, well-known throughout the county. Resident many years of Ross Twp. passed away a few minutes after 6:00 Saturday morning after a short illness. Resident of R.R. #1 out of Alvin since young manhood with exception of a few years spent east of Danville. Mr. Green survived by his widow, formally Miss Mary G. Hollen and four children, Thomas, Joseph P., Charles and Phoebe. Plans for the funeral have not been made.
Funeral services for the prominent farmer and land owner, who died at his home early Saturday morning, Ross Twp., three and 1/2 miles south east of Alvin were held 9:00 Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville, on N. Walnut Street with Rev. T.F. Monahan officiating. Burial at St. Pat's cemetery.
The illness of a few weeks brought to end a remarkable career and one full of activity. Born in Ireland, Dec. 11, 1829, son of Charles and Plina McCabe. He learned the trade of linen weaver when a boy. Followed that work in Ireland until 1850 when he was 21 years of age, and decided to emigrate to America. He was first employed as a weaver in eastern states and then came west and settled in St. Louis. There he met and married Miss Mary Tracy about in 1855. She died a year later together with their new born son, Johnnie.
Mr. Green, in 1880, who had in meantime moved to this county and settled on the farm, where he died, married Miss Mary J. Halloran, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Patrick J. Halloran of St. Mary's of the Woods, near Terre Haute, Ind. They then moved to vicinity of Alvin.
Mrs. Green, died in Sept. 1919 and since that time, Mr. Green made his home with his daughter, Margaret on Grant Street. Last Sept. he returned to the farm, the home of his son, George, who was running the old home place and became ill there.
