Pops

~~May 10, 1907--June 5, 1998~~

I struggle to find the right words to say how much I love and miss Pop's. Lawrence was the father I never knew nor had, he was a wonderful father to his children, his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. The great-grandchildren, what can I say? Pop's looked forward to their visits, loved to watch them grow, hear their laughter, and see their smiles. I can only pray that Bill and I are loved as much by our grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Pop's was. The memories and love will never fade away, we have you in our hearts. As the last days of your life lingered on, God held you in his hands and guided you home to heaven where Mom awaited you. You lived a good life, fought the battle, and now you are up in heaven with Mom, watching over all of us. When Mom left you many years before, that sad day in all our lifes, I think this poem below would have comforted you. Now this poem gives me that same comfort. Rest in peace, we love you.

Should You Go First

Should you go first and I remain
To walk the road alone
I'll live in memory's garden, dear
With happy days we've known
In spring I'll watch for roses red
When fades the lilac blue,
In early fall when brown leaves call
I'll catch a glimpse of you.

Should you go first and I remain
For battles to be fought,
Each thing we've touched along the way
Will be a hallowed spot.
I'll hear your voice, I'll see your smile,
Though blindly I may grope,
The memory of your helping hand
Will buoy me on with hope.

Should you go first and I remain
To finish with this scroll,
No lengthening shadows shall creep in
To make this life seem droll.
We've known so much of happiness,
We've had our cup of joy,
And memory is one of gift of God
That death cannot destroy.

Should you go first and I remain,
One thing I'd have you do:
Walk slowly down that long, lone path
For soon I'll follow you.
I'll want to know each step you take
That I may walk the same,
For some day down that lonely road
You'll hear me call your name.

The Day God Called You Home

God looked around his Garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
And knew that you would never get well on earth again.
He saw your path was difficult, he closed your tired eyes,
He whispered to you "Peace be Thine" and gave you wings to fly.
When we saw you sleeping so calm and free of pain,
We would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again.
You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide,
You live on through your children, you're always by our side.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

~~What Cancer Cannot Do~~

It cannot cripple love
It cannot shatter hope
It cannot corrode faith
It cannot cast away peace
It cannot destroy confidence
It cannot kill friendship
It cannot silence courage
It cannot invade the soul
It cannot quench the spirit.
Our greatest enemy is not the disease, but despair.
Cancer might rob us of that blissful ignorance that once led
us to believe that tomorrow stretched forever.
In exchange we are granted the vision to see each day, today,
as a precious gift to be used wisely and richly.
