GREEN, BROWN RED HOT AT CAYUGA

By: Bud Northrup - Photos: Gordon Green - Cayuga, Indiana - 6/24-25/06

Young Shane Green came very close to a perfect night at the Pleasure Riders night hill climb with two class wins, a second place, and the Fast Time Award. Green set the early fast time mark at 4.435 seconds on his YZ250 on the 155 foot hill on his first ride in the 250cc class, then followed that with a class leading 4.623 second run on his KTM 380 in 450cc first round action. But he beat his own fast time in the 600cc class, flying his KX500 over the top in a sizzling 4.320 seconds - a time which would hold up all night long for the Fast Time trophy and $100 cash prize.

Scott Pearson spoiled Green's bid for a perfect night by sailing his CRF450 thumper over the top in 4.486 seconds to snatch the 450cc class win on his second ride. John Michael Gocken was second to Green in the 250cc class with a good 4.430 second run - less than 1/100th of a second behind. Tom Brown posted a 4.410 second time on his CR500 to take the second spot in the 600cc class. Mark Schroeder was Green's closest challenger for the fast time, carding an excellent 4.333 seconds on his stock length YZ250 to win the 400cc Stock class - only 13/1,000's slower than Green. Justin James claimed that second place spot with a 4.707 second run. To read more: King of the Hill

COMPTON, GREEN FAST AT PLEASURE RIDER HILL CLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Cayuga, IN - 7/08/06

108 riders competed at the Pleasure Riders night hill climb on July 8, with Shane Green and D.J. Compton emerging as the fastest of the fast.

Green first set the fast time in the first round on his YZ250 in the 250cc class, flying over the top in 4.252 seconds to take that class lead into intermission. He was the only rider to beat that time himself in the first round, as he sailed his CR500 high over the 155 foot hill in a sizzling 4.198 seconds to take the 600cc class lead, and the Fast Time, in to the intermission break.

But in second round racing, D.J. Compton blitzed the hill on his KX500 in an outstanding 4.103 seconds to snatch the 600cc class win and Fast time from Green. Green's first round ride held up for second place with Justin Green claiming third.

Green still enjoyed a double win evening as his first ride in the 250cc class held up for that win, with Mark Schroeder claiming second in 4.632 seconds on his Yamaha. Schroeder brought his stock length YZ250 back later to win the 400cc Stock class with a 4.399 second run with Compton running second.

Green's second win came in the 450cc class on his KTM 380, where his first round 4.387 second run held up for the win. Scott Pearson, riding a CRF450 thumper, placed second in 4.584 seconds. To read more: King of the Hill

POPHAM TOPS 'EM AT WATERMELON/SWEETCORN FESTIVAL HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Photo: Gordon Green -Mt. Vernon, IL - 8/19/06 (Night Climb)

The King City Dirt Riders hosted their annual Sweetcorn/Watermelon Festival Hill Climb on August 19, with 134 riders and several hundred spectators showing up for the event. Young Mike Popham, from Amboy, Illinois, emerged as the fastest of the fast, winning the coveted Fast Time Trophy and a $300 cash prize that went with it.

Popham's fast time came in the highly competitive 600cc Four Stroke class. Riding his Yamaha YZ450F thumper, he posted the fastest time of the first round in the class, a 3.734 second run, but was well off the overall fast time of 3.516 seconds set by Shane Green in the 600cc class. In the second round, however, he really turned the hot Yamaha on, flying over the top in a sizzling 3.437 seconds to seal the class win, and set a new overall fast time. He needed the quick time to win the class as Justin Trent had slipped under him with a 3.583 second run on his Honda to briefly take the class lead.

Green was a double class winner, and just missed the fast time. He improved on his first ride in the 600cc class with an excellent 3.461 second time, good enough to win the class, but was the overall fast time for just a few minutes, as Popham blew it away in the next class. 'Crazy Jake' Tackitt claimed second with a 3.500 second run with Tom Brown close behind with a 3.517 second time.

Green's second win came in the 250cc class, but had to come from behind to earn it. He found himself in third place at the intermission with a 3.828 second time, behind D.J. Compton who carded a 3.699 second run and Matt Peters with a 3.774 second time. In second round action, Popham popped into the lead with a 3.614 second run on his YZ250, only to see Green slip under him on his Yamaha with a class winning 3.586 second high flying ride. Compton's first round time held up for third with Cappello claiming fourth. To read more: King of the Hill

GREEN, EMORY FAST AT MT. VERNON

By: Bud Northrup - Photos by: Gordon Green - Mt Vernon, IL - 8/19-20/06

The King City Dirt Riders ran their rain delayed hillclimb originally scheduled for June 4, with Shane Green and Caleb Emory emerging as the fast guys of the day. Green won 2 of the three 'regular' classes he entered, took the Fast Time award, then was the best in the King of the Hill one run winner take all shootout for the ten fastest riders of the day.

Green's first win came in the 250cc class where he set the first round fast time of 3.649 seconds on his YZ250, just barely ahead of Mike Popham with a 3.652 second time on his Yamaha. Green improved his time with a 3.640 second run in the second round to seal the win. In the 600cc class the young gun from Georgetown, Illinois had to come from behind. Tom Brown sailed his CR500 over the 150 foot hill in 3.466 seconds to take the first round lead with Green in fourth place, with Jake Tackitt and D.J. Compton in second and third. In the second round, however, Green really let it fly, holding the throttle on just a bit longer and flew high over the top in a sizzling 3.437 seconds on his KX500 to take the class lead and set a new fast time which would hold up for the rest of the day. He then returned to action in the King of the Hill race, sponsored by Kaleb Northrup and his kingofthehill.org website. Green turned in another sizzling ride, this one a 3.454 second winning time. Mike Popham was second with his YZ450F thumper in 3.512 seconds.

Green's perfect day was ruined by Matt Peters, who overtook Green in the second round with a 3.653 second time on his KTM380 to win the 450cc class. Green had posted a 3.695 second run in first round action on his KTM, but couldn't improve on his second ride.

On Sunday, Green and Emory continued their fast ways. Emory had another perfect day, winning both his classes and taking the Youth Fast Time trophy again. His youth fast time came in the 85cc Senior Mini class where he posted a 3.982 second run on his KX85 for the class win, with Dylan Brady second in 4.464 seconds on his CR85. Emory then rode his KX125 to a near identical 3.979 second time to claim the win in the 125cc class, with Schuyler Kalaher taking second with a good 4.033 second time.

Green posted his fast time in the ultra competitive 600cc class again. Riding his KX500 he flew over the top in an amazing 3.382 seconds on his first ride, a time that held up all day for the class win and the Fast Time Award. D.J. Compton was second with a 3.466 second time on his Kawasaki. To read more: King of the Hill

TRENT'S KING AT INDIANA STATE HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIPS

By: Bud Northrup - Photos: Gordon Green - Cayuga, Indiana - 8/26 & 27/06

The Pleasure Riders unveiled their 'new look' on Saturday night, August 26 with 2 hills. The 'old' 155 foot hill had a fourth breaker added at the top, and a new 113 foot hill had been added for the youth classes. Shane Green was the fastest rider on the new amateur class hill, and Caleb Emory was the fastest on the Youth hill.

Green had to come from behind for his fast time as Justin Trent set the time at 4.600 seconds on his first ride in the 600cc class, with Green in second place. In second round action, however, Green flew his KX500 over the top in 4.456 seconds to take the class win, and the Fast Time award. Randy 'Rocketman' Trosper also slipped under Trent's time with a 4.550 second run on his Honda to claim second place.

The Indiana State Championship climb was run on Sunday, and started in a driving rain. But the rain went away by noon and the hills dried quickly, so all the riders got at least one good run. Justin Trent emerged as the top rider, winning the 600cc class, the King of the Hill class, and taking the Fast Time of the day trophy and money. He didn't waste any time, setting a 4.308 second time on his Honda in the 600cc class which would hold up all day - except for his own 4.293 second on his second ride just to prove the first one wasn't a fluke. Cody Jenner claimed second with a 4.421 second run on his Honda.

Then, incredibly, Trent sailed over the top of the hill in 4.308 seconds again to win the King of the Hill class - a one run winner take all shootout of the ten fastest riders of the day. Eric Wheelwright was his closest challenger there with a 4.442 second time on his Honda.
Popham, the 250cc class points leader, got his first win in that class with a tremendous come from behind effort. He was in fourth place at intermission with Shane Green sitting on the lead with a 4.821 second run. In second round action, Eric Wheelwright flew his YZ250 over in 4.581 seconds to take the class lead, but Popham responded with a sizzling 4.523 second clock stopper to take the win. Blake Cappello carded a 4.692 second run for third place. To read more: King of the Hill

GREEN HAS PERFECT NIGHT AT CIMC HILL CLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Photos: Gordon Green - Neoga, IL - 9/16/2006

Shane Green, from Georgetown, Illinois, had a perfect night at the Central Illinois M/C, winning all three classes he entered and taking the Fast Time of the Night award. His first win came in the 250cc class where he overtook Matt Peters for the win. Peter topped the 100 foot very rough hill in 3.362 seconds on his first ride on his Honda to take the lead into intermission with Green running second. In the second round Green turned in a beautiful 3.218 second run on his YZ250 to take the class win, as Peters failed to improve on his time.

Riding his KTM380 in the 450cc Green found himself in second place again at the break, his 3.396 second run well off a 3.166 second time delivered by Cody Jenner on a YZ450F. But, just as in the 250cc class, Green delivered an even faster 3.149 second time on his second run to take the class win from Jenner, who settled for second place.

Green's fast time came in the 600cc class where he found himself once more in second place at intermission with a 3.247 second time on his KX500, once more with Cody Jenner leading with a 3.172 second run on his CR500. And once again, Green came from behind to win his class, this time with a sizzling 2.957 second high flying ride that also set the Fast Time of the night. Green was the only rider to break into the 2's all night. D.J. Compton was close with a 3.050 second run on his KX500 to slip under Jenner for second place. To read more: King of the Hill
